CARVED WOODEN SHAMAN'S OYSTERCATCHER AND FROG RATTLE (Item No. Rattle 003)
Origin: Native American - Tlingit or Haida
Age: 10-20 years approx
Length: 446mm (17.5 inches approx)
Price: £225 (including postage worldwide)
This beautiful hand carved and painted 'shaman's rattle' is in the shape of an oystercatcher, with a frog riding on it's back.
Rattles such as is this were historically used by shamans in curing ceremonies. The oystercatcher is powerful to Northwest Coast shamans, as it inhabits the shoreline - the world between the water and land - which parallels the shaman's role between the human and spirit worlds. The Frog also shares this dual aspect, living both above and below the water, and also frogs are important in Northwestern cosmology as bringers of luck.
The rattle is similar to one that sold a little while ago, but this one is not quite of such high craftsmanship and does not have abalone shell in it's eyes. It is still however a stunning peice of work, and is in perfect condition - all carved from one piece of wood. It has a bound rope grip on the handle. A stunning one-off piece of carving and a very special item for your shamanic practice.

CARVED AND PAINTED CEDAR RATTLE (Item No. Rattle 005)
Origin: Native American - Northwest Coastal Tribe (possibly Haida)
Age: 50 - 30 years approx
Length: 90mm (7 inches)
Price: £45 (including postage worldwide)
Painted Northwest Coast Cedarwood rattle, probably a tourist piece from the 1940's. The rattle is painted with a traditional design in black and red. The rattle is in fairly good condition, although there is sign of a past small repair. To be used as a rattle in your practice, it would be advisable to do a small amount of easy to do restoration work, as it has a slight split that would benefit from a small amount of glue, and the handle is slightly loose and might need to be glued at some point. It is pleasant to hold, and sounds nice, and would, after a small amount of easy restoration work make a beautiful medicine rattle or it could be used with out any restoration as a display object.

Age: 40 - 20 years approx
Length (not including tassels): 410mm (16 inches approx)

A Kiowa metal salt shaker veteran's or dancers rattle. Rattles like this are traditionally given to Native American solders returning from active service in a war, although they are also used as dance rattles too. The rattle has a part peyote beaded wooden handle, ending in white buckskin tassels. Above the salt shaker it has a traditional horse hair tuft, decorated with more peyote beadwork.
