MONGOLIAN FOUR HAPPINESS SHAMAN'S MIRROR (Item No. Toli 001)
Origin: Mongolia
Age: 200 - 90 years
Diameter: 126mm (5 inches) approx
Price: £135 (including postage worldwide) - SOLD
This large, beautifully decorated toli (Siberian Shaman's Mirror) from Mongolia was used by a shaman in healing and other protective rituals. Most likely worn around their neck, it would have been used to empower other objects and healing liquids, as well as protecting the shaman from spirit attack. A large mirror like this would have been a very important shamanic tool.
The lug at the back of the mirror is part of the casting of the mirror instead of being welded on, this shows it is a mirror of greater age and better quality. The back is decorated with moulded Chinese letters often known as the 'Four Happinesses, which also symbolise the Four Directions
The front of the mirror has been polished and there are one or two tiny copper areas - these are part of the mirrors structure and although can be seen can not be felt by the touch.
The mirror is in good condition, with some scratches to the front but no more than would be normal wear and evidence of its long life. There is part of an old silk fabric offering scarf tied to its back.
